Course Overview!

Ball State University's Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Science in Journalism provides a comprehensive, hands-on education in storytelling across various media (print, video, audio, graphics, social media, blogs, apps, etc.). The program emphasizes real-world reporting, truth-seeking, and immersive projects. Students develop multimedia storytelling skills while specializing in one of four concentrations: Writing and Multimedia Storytelling, Mass Communication, Photographic Storytelling, or Sports Writing and Multimedia Storytelling. The curriculum uses state-of-the-art facilities, student media organizations, professional student groups, and a working newsroom lab to provide practical experience. The program is designed to prepare students for the dynamic and evolving field of journalism.

Course Structure

The Journalism major requires 27-33 credits of core courses, plus an additional 15-18 credits for the chosen concentration. Students can pursue multiple majors or concentrations within the School of Journalism and Strategic Communication (SJSC)'s three main fields (Journalism, Media Design and Development, and Strategic Communication). The program includes a combination of core journalism courses covering fundamental skills and theory, and specialized courses within the chosen concentration area. Students gain experience through hands-on projects, internships, and work in student media organizations. The curriculum is designed to provide a robust foundation in journalism principles and practical skills.
