The Master of Science (MS) in Geology at Auburn University is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in geological principles and practices. The program aims to equip graduates for successful careers in industry, government, or further academic pursuits. Students can choose between a thesis or non-thesis option. The curriculum blends broad geological training with opportunities for specialization through electives, directed studies, and research. The program also emphasizes hands-on experience, requiring field work and demonstrating proficiency in computer-based geographic information systems (GIS).
The MS in Geology offers two options: thesis and non-thesis. The thesis option requires 30 semester hours, including Geocommunication (GEOL 7100), Research and Thesis (GEOL 7990), 18 hours of graduate-level geology courses, and 1-3 hours of approved 6000- or 7000-level geology electives. The non-thesis option requires 40 semester hours, encompassing Geocommunication (GEOL 7100), 33 hours of graduate-level geology courses, and 4 hours of approved electives. A summer field course or comparable experience before the second year and computer language/GIS knowledge before graduation are mandatory for both options. Both options involve a mix of core coursework, specialized electives, and research or a capstone project.
