Course Overview!

The Bachelor of Industrial Design program at Auburn University is a comprehensive four and a half-year curriculum focused on equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge for a successful career in industrial design. The program integrates design principles, engineering, human factors, marketing, and sociology, providing a holistic approach to product development. Students develop technical skills in CAD, prototyping, photography, sketching, and graphics, and gain knowledge in design methods, color theory, product planning, visual communication, materials, manufacturing, consumer psychology, and environmental studies. The program culminates in a professional portfolio and thesis, preparing graduates for diverse roles in the industry.

Course Structure

The program is structured across nine semesters, including a crucial summer semester (INDD First Year Studio) after the first year, which is a prerequisite to the professional program. The curriculum progresses through foundational courses in design principles, technical skills, and relevant theory. The first two years cover two-dimensional and three-dimensional design principles, anthropometry, the history of industrial design, CAD, and related courses. The junior year delves into more specialized areas such as exhibit and packaging design, industrial design methods, materials and technology, and advanced CAD. The senior year focuses on advanced product design, a thesis project, and the creation of a professional portfolio to showcase their work. Specific coursework includes English Composition, core science and mathematics, humanities, and social science courses alongside the design-specific courses listed in the curriculum.
