The Bachelor of Science in General Science Education with a focus on Geology/Earth Systems at Auburn University is a four-year program designed to prepare students for a career in secondary science education. The curriculum integrates a strong foundation in the geological sciences with pedagogical training to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to effectively teach science at the high school level. Students will gain a deep understanding of Earth's processes, systems, and history, as well as develop effective teaching methodologies and classroom management strategies. The program emphasizes hands-on learning through laboratory experiences, field work, and student teaching, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for the challenges of a teaching career. The program includes coursework in geology, biology, chemistry, physics, and education, integrating subject matter expertise with teaching pedagogy.
The four-year curriculum is structured to provide a comprehensive education in geology, earth systems, and teaching methodology. The freshman year focuses on foundational science courses in biology, chemistry, geology, math and English composition, as well as introductory education courses. The sophomore year builds upon this foundation with more advanced biology and chemistry courses, further exploration of earth science, and additional core courses. The junior year introduces physics, specialized geology electives, and core science education courses focused on curriculum development and the use of technology in teaching. The senior year is largely dedicated to student teaching, culminating in a clinical residency where students gain practical experience in a high school setting, along with related seminars and educational courses in adolescent development.
