Course Overview!

The Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood/Elementary Special Education program at Auburn University prepares students to become teachers and early interventionists for children with disabilities from birth to age nine. The curriculum focuses on evidence-based practices to support families and the development of young children with developmental delays or disabilities, as well as elementary-aged students with disabilities. Graduates will be equipped to work in various settings, including homes and elementary schools, and will meet the criteria for ALSDE Level B certification in birth through 6th grade. The program covers infants and toddlers (birth to 2), preschoolers (3-4), and K-6 grade levels. Students will gain a strong foundation in child development, learning, assessment, and behavior management within the context of diverse learners and settings. The program culminates in a clinical residency, providing extensive hands-on experience in real-world educational environments.

Course Structure

The four-year program integrates coursework in English composition, US history, global politics or American government, geography, economics, fine arts, mathematics (specifically for elementary education), science, digital literacy, and computer science in education. Core courses in literature and child development are included. The curriculum heavily emphasizes special education coursework, covering diversity and exceptionality, curriculum development in special education (including mathematics and literacy), behavior management, assessment for eligibility, collaboration in K-12 settings, and methods for teaching literacy to students with disabilities. Extensive practicum and clinical residency experiences provide practical application of learned concepts.
