While the program covers most disabilities, it excludes sensory impairments and certain severe disabilities. Graduates are certified at the ALSDE Level B for K-12 grades. The program emphasizes collaboration and the development of practical skills for working with diverse learners and implementing effective teaching strategies.
The four-year curriculum includes foundational courses in English Composition, Literature, History, Economics, Geography, Political Science, and Communication. Core courses in mathematics and science are also required. The program includes specific coursework on diversity and exceptionality in learners, child development, assessment, literacy methods, curriculum development (in math and literacy for students with disabilities), behavior management, instructional technology, and transition services. Significant time is dedicated to practical experiences through practicums and a clinical residency.
