History

(1928) Origins and Establishment

Its historical roots date back to 1897 during the Qing Dynasty when it was founded as Qiushi Academy and is then considered to be among the oldest modern institutions of higher education in all of China. Qiushi Academy was founded in the city of Hangzhou by Lei Qi to express the emphasis on Western knowledge and modern thinking during the era of the self-strengthening movement. Later, in 1928, it was renamed the National Chekiang University using the older romanized spelling of the province's name, and although it moved campuses throughout the Second Sino-Japanese War, it achieved national recognition during the administration of its president, 竺可桢 (Zhu Kezhen), from 1936-1949.

Modern Day Development

In 1998, it integrated with Hangzhou University, Zhejiang Agricultural University, and Zhejiang Medical University, forming a mega-university with enhanced capabilities and breadth in interdisciplinary research. Currently, Zhejiang University is always among the top-ranked institutions globally and the top-ranked universities in China. The university has forged strong partnerships globally, with joint institutes established with top foreign universities such as Imperial College London and the University of Illinois, and attracts students from all over the world. The university values innovation and start-ups, and there exist strong linkages with the Hangzhou technology industry, especially with Alibaba's ecosystem. The contemporary version of Zhejiang University is also extending the boundaries of research into AI, biotech, and sustainable development.

History and Heritage

Hangzhou boasts a history of over 2,200 years, which makes it the capital of the Southern Song dynasty from 1127 till 1279. Some popular dishes include West Lake Fish in Sweet and Sour Sauce, Longjing shrimp, which uses local dragon well tea, and Dongpo pork, a braised meat dish from the Song dynasty poet Su Dongpo. Traditional tea houses around scenic spots serve locally grown Longjing tea. The soothing accompaniment to their pastries, such as osmanthus cake and bean curd, is a nice relief.
