Xuzhou Medical College, which was later renamed Xuzhou Medical University, is a public medical university in Xuzhou city in Jiangsu Province in eastern China. It is a key university under the Jiangsu Provincial Government and is recognized for its high level of medical education and scientific research work in northern Jiangsu and the Huaihai economic area as a whole. Xuzhou Medical University offers undergraduate courses as well as master’s and doctoral degree programs and postdoctoral research opportunities in fields such as clinical medicine, basic medicine, nursing, pharmacology, and biomedical engineering for domestic and foreign candidates.

History

(1958) Origins and Establishment

Xuzhou Medical University dates back to 1958 when it was founded as a branch of Nanjing Medical College in a bid to cater to an ever-increasing need for doctors within China. However, this was followed by an expansion initiative that took place when it was merged with a certain Xinhailian Medical Academy and was renamed as such. Achieving independence as an individual entity took place when it was renamed as Xuzhou Medical College in 1960. However, over the past few decades, this college has expanded its wings to include postgraduate courses and recruitment of foreign students as well as conducting advanced research.

Modern Day Development

Today, Xuzhou Medical University is a well-developed centre for healthcare education, research, and clinical practice in Jiangsu Province. The university has a number of colleges and departments offering a variety of disciplines covering medicine, science, engineering, and management, while accommodating thousands of students with both Chinese and international programs provided in English and Chinese. It continues to expand its research output and global partnerships: participating in scientific projects sponsored by national and provincial grants, and hosting academic exchanges with institutions abroad. Xuzhou is one of the historic and cultural cities of China, which has a history spanning thousands of years. Historically, the city was known by the name Pengcheng. In fact, this was a very significant event in the Chu-Han Conteition fight between Liu Bang and Xiang Yu in around 206 BC. The museum in Xuzhou has a collection of many Han dynasty artifacts, including the Western Han gold-threaded burial garment. This museum offers a significant understanding of Chinese history. The Sacred Heart Cathedral in this city was constructed in the earlier 20th century and was conserved due to its cultural heritage status.
