The University of South China is a full-time comprehensive public university incorporated in March of 2000 from the merger between the Central South Institute of Technology and Hengyang Medical College. It later incorporated the Sixth Research Institute of the Nuclear Industry in 2002. Supported by the Hunan Provincial Government and several national ministries, the university possesses strengths in engineering, medicine, science, management, and the arts. USC owns over 25 colleges and schools, including affiliated hospitals, enrolls students from across China and abroad, and combines medical training with engineering education and research for regional and national development goals.
(2000) Origins and Establishment
The University of South China has its origins in the Hengyang Medical College, founded in 1958, and the Central South Institute of Technology, founded in 1959. These precursor schools were founded to help ensure that medical and technical professionals were provided to the province of Hunan, during the time that China experienced a period of expansion following the founding of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. In March 2000, the two schools were formally merged to create the University of South China, this time creating an academic institution that was larger and, therefore, more diversified. Then, in October 2002, the Sixth Research Institute of the Nuclear Industry, founded in 1962, merged into this university.
Modern Day Development
Since its founding, the University of South China has expanded its disciplines and published research papers and international communication. At present, the university boasts dozens of undergraduate disciplines, master and doctoral programs, and several postdoctoral research stations. The university has formed its own strengths in disciplines such as nuclear science, clinical medicine, environmental sciences, and engineering disciplines. The university partners with more than 30 Chinese and foreign universities and research institutions. USC actively recruits international students. The university is engaged in the country’s higher education capacity construction and continues to improve its faculty and equipment.

The purpose of the University of South China is to foster competent professionals who can apply academic knowledge, moral standards, and skills in practice. The institution is concerned with quality education, research, and service to the community in an effort to ensure the ability of its graduands to perform effectively in the regions’ development and medical and engineering disciplines as well as the international community.
