Shandong First Medical University, or Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, is a key provincial medical university, which has its roots in Jinan, the province of Shandong, China. It has the honor of being formed in February 2019, after which the Ministry of Education of China has given its consent for the merge of the following four prominent universities: Taishan Medical University, Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, Shandong Provincial Hospital, and Shandong Qianfoshan Hospital into the same institution. It has more than 26,000 full-time students, including undergrad, masters, and doctoral students, out of which there are more than 600 foreign students from more than 40 different nations.
(1915) Origins and Establishment
The history of Shandong First Medical University dates back to traditional medical education and research organizations within Shandong Province, with an academic heritage traceable to the early 20th century and the establishment of the first official medical education institution within the province in 1915. In 2019, it was formed through a provincial reform plan that combined Taishan Medical University and important provincial medical institutions such as the Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences and provincial hospitals such as Shandong Provincial Hospital and Qianfoshan Hospital into a single medical university and research organization with the aim of optimizing medical education and research resources within Shandong Province and establishing the largest medical science institution within the province.
Modern Day Development
Since its founding, Shandong First Medical University has quickly developed in terms of its academic scale, research prowess, and international exchange. The university was chosen for the “first-class” construction project of high-quality universities in Shandong Province in 2020. The university's subjects of clinical medicine and pharmacology rank among the best globally according to international ESI rankings, and it also has large-scale affiliated hospitals. The university has increased international cooperation, accepting students from over a dozen countries, and also carries out international cooperation agreements and trans-disciplinary programs for emerging areas of medicine to adapt to international health and innovation demands.
