Shandong First Medical University, or Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, is a key provincial medical university, which has its roots in Jinan, the province of Shandong, China. It has the honor of being formed in February 2019, after which the Ministry of Education of China has given its consent for the merge of the following four prominent universities: Taishan Medical University, Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences, Shandong Provincial Hospital, and Shandong Qianfoshan Hospital into the same institution. It has more than 26,000 full-time students, including undergrad, masters, and doctoral students, out of which there are more than 600 foreign students from more than 40 different nations.

History

(1915) Origins and Establishment

The history of Shandong First Medical University dates back to traditional medical education and research organizations within Shandong Province, with an academic heritage traceable to the early 20th century and the establishment of the first official medical education institution within the province in 1915. In 2019, it was formed through a provincial reform plan that combined Taishan Medical University and important provincial medical institutions such as the Shandong Academy of Medical Sciences and provincial hospitals such as Shandong Provincial Hospital and Qianfoshan Hospital into a single medical university and research organization with the aim of optimizing medical education and research resources within Shandong Province and establishing the largest medical science institution within the province.

Modern Day Development

Since its founding, Shandong First Medical University has quickly developed in terms of its academic scale, research prowess, and international exchange. The university was chosen for the “first-class” construction project of high-quality universities in Shandong Province in 2020. The university's subjects of clinical medicine and pharmacology rank among the best globally according to international ESI rankings, and it also has large-scale affiliated hospitals. The university has increased international cooperation, accepting students from over a dozen countries, and also carries out international cooperation agreements and trans-disciplinary programs for emerging areas of medicine to adapt to international health and innovation demands.

History and Heritage

Taian is known as the gateway to Mountain Tai, an abbreviation of the Five Great Mountains of China. Mountain Tai is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered sacred because of its historical value. Among the ancient rituals performed in imperial China, the Feng Shan ritual is considered sacred and is still practiced today on Mountain Tai. Additionally, at the base of Mountain Tai is the Dai Temple, also called Mount Tai Dai Temple, that houses temples and architectures that record the historical and cultural legacy since then of Mountain Tai, an object of worship and reverence.

Food and Cafe

Taian boasts a vibrant food culture that stems from the robust Shandong (Lu) cuisine, and local dishes are inspired by the agricultural prosperity featured in this part of the world. Taishan Fire-Baked Bread, which is crispy and golden, and is typically baked using charcoal, is one local snack that locals relish at all hours and along the food streets with other local dishes like Cumin-Flavored Barbecue, pancakes, and Two-Ingredient Hot Soup. In and around the community centers and the cultural quarters, coffee shops and tea houses offer local favorites like Green Tea, Chinese Pastries, and Specialty Coffee that serve as relaxation lounges after the tour.

Taian belongs to Mount Tai, which, in its turn, assumes spiritual and historical importance for the people, presenting festivals, art, and local traditions. One such is the annual Chinese Taishan·Fengshan Grand Ceremony, an event reminiscent of the Feng Shan rituals once performed on Mount Tai by Emperors.
