History and Heritage

There is a rich history associated with Qiqihar, which is a result of its role as an important settlement at the edge of northeast China. Historically, the region inhabited nomadic Daur and Tungus pastoral herders. Its name is Daur for “frontier.” In the latter years of the 17th century, the Qing administration constructed a garrison town within the region during their campaigns in Heilongjiang. In fact, the settlement developed during the early years of the 20th century as a result of railroad development and industrialization to become an important cultural and economic hub in western Heilongjiang province.

The culture of Qiqihar is a combination of the Han culture and the culture of the other ethnic groups, including the Manchu, Daur, Mongolian, and Hui ethnicities. The folk arts of this region include embroidery, silverware, paper-cuts, and shadow play, as the music and seasonal folk dancing provide a means of coming together as a community on occasions of celebration. The local dialects of this region can still be seen as an influence of the culture of the region, and some of the festivals celebrated include the Crane Watching Festival due to the red-crowned cranes found in the Zhalong Nature Reserve.

Transportation in Qiqihar is robust, friendly, and based on its role as a key rail and road hub in northeast China. The Chinese Eastern Railway and later lines link the city with Harbin and Shenyang and extend into Inner Mongolia, supporting both passenger travel and freight movement underpinning local industry.
