Nanjing Medical University, or NJMU, is a public medical school in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. Starting from its inception in a college for health, it has expanded into a full-fledged university offering degrees in medicine, nursing, public health, pharmacy, biology, and other disciplines. NJMU is participating in the national Double First-Class Program in China and is under joint administration by the Ministry of Education, National Health Commission, and Jiangsu Provincial Government. The university has multiple campuses, affiliated medical facilities, a substantial faculty, and a remarkable track record in teaching and research
(1934) Origins and Establishment
Nanjing Medical University is started in 1934 as Jiangsu Provincial College of Health Policy and Management in Zhenjiang. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, it changed to National Jiangsu Medical College. Later in 1957, it relocated to Nanjing and changed its name to Nanjing Medical College. It was one of the first medical schools in China that adopted the six-year medical program in the 1960s. The right to grant masters' and doctoral degrees was achieved in 1981, and in 1993, it attained university status as Nanjing Medical University.
Modern Day Development
Nanjing Medical University has tens of thousands of students enrolled in its education programs, engaging in research in several areas of health science. The institution boasts scholars from China’s prestigious science organizations, providing programs for doctorate and master’s degrees, as well as core labs and national teaching groups. It also in 2024 marked its 90th anniversary, emphasizing progress in developing human resources, education reform, medical research, and engagement with other prestigious universities around the globe, such as Harvard, Yale, and the University of Toronto.
