Jinggangshan University (JGSU) is a public comprehensive university, situated in the Qingyuan District, Ji’an City, Jiangxi Province, China. Established in 1958, the institution is located in the revolutionary area of Jinggangshan and is jointly administered and supported by the Chinese Ministry of Education and the Jiangxi government, as well as assistance from the Tongji University. Jinggangshan University has multiple campuses and offers education at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the fields of economics, law, literature, science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, management, and the arts. JGSU has a large number of students, including international students, and pursues studies in diverse fields.

History

(1958) Origins and Establishment

Jinggangshan University was founded in 1958 in Ji’an, Jiangxi Province, tracing its origins back to the historic area of Jinggangshan, known for the country’s first rural revolutionary base established in 1927 under the collaboration of Mao Zedong and his comrades. Its predecessor was on the verge of being shut down in the 1960s, owing to some difficult times in the country’s economy. In the later 1970s and early 1980s, some educational institutions such as regional branches of Jiangxi Normal University and Jiangxi Medical University merged to form teacher and medical colleges. By merging some local educational institutions in 2000 and 2003, the groundwork for today’s university was accomplished. In 2007, it was formally renamed Jinggangshan University to better cover its comprehensive nature and its historic identity.
