History

(1946) Origins and Establishment

Jilin University was established in 1946 as the Northeast College of Administration in Harbin, Heilongjiang. It experienced several consolidations and name changes, being renamed the Northeast Academy of Science in May 1948 through the merger with Harbin University, and reverted to Northeast Administration College in November of the same year. It was renamed Northeast People’s University in 1950, and its location was moved to Changchun during the Korean War. It changed its name to Jilin University in 1958. It merged with Jilin University of Technology, Norman Bethune Medical University, Changchun University of Science and Technology, and Changchun Institute of Posts and Telecommunications in the year 2000 to comprise the contemporary Jilin University. The University of Military Logistics joined in 2004.

Modern Day Development

Jilin University is a premier comprehensive research university and is home to over 70,000 students, including overseas students from over 40 different countries, across various undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs. It takes part in China’s national "Double First Class” program and also has partnerships with over 300 top research universities across the world to facilitate exchange and research activities. It is also strong in scientific research and innovation, and sports active performance in subject rankings and high-quality publication output. It also focuses on interdisciplinarity, international cooperation, and cultivating talents to respond to regional and global challenges.

History and Heritage

Changchun have numerous historical attractions, which represent the modern and imperial patterns in its historical evolution. The Palace Museum of the Puppet Emperor was the palace where Puyi, the former emperor of the Qing dynasty, resided when he was the ruler of the state of Manchukuo, under the control of Japan, in the early 20th century. Another historical attraction, Confucius Temple, was constructed in 1872, embodying traditional architectural design. There are also historical relics of the Buyeo, Balhae, and Goguryeo states at the nearby Jilin Provincial Museum. Other historical attractions include Jingyuetan National Forest Park, which was established in 1934, symbolically marking the change in Changchun to a green city.

Changchun features a combination of Northeast Chinese cuisine with modern café culture. Local cuisine consists of typical northeastern Chinese cuisine, such as ginseng chicken soup, regional stews, and griddled BBQ skewers at night markets during the evening.Street foods are found on Chongqing Road Food Street and Xikouzi Street, with sellers and restaurants providing regional foods. Western-style cafes are found along Guilin Road and European streets that provide specialty coffee, pastry, and a cozy area to socialize or conduct business. This allows both fans of typical cuisines and café enthusiasts an enjoyable experience in Changchun.

Changchun Railway Station and Changchun West Railway Station connect people using high-speed and normal trains throughout China. Changchun also boasts a well-established metro and rail network for the daily commute, as well as a well-established bus network and a historic tram network.
