(1947) Origins and Establishment

Jiamusi University dates back to the year 1947, and it has been located in the city of Jiamusi, Heilongjiang Province, which turned out to be a veryimportant time for the modern educational development of China. The reason why Jiamusi University came into existence was the growing need for high-quality professionals for the northeast part of the country, especially in fields such as medicine, engineering, and educational theory. After a number of years, through the process of institutional mergers, academic re-structuring, and government assistance, the university has been expanding. Due to constant advancements in the fields of teaching, scientific research, and medical service, Jiamusi University has become a comprehensive public institution.

History and Heritage

Jiamusi, a city in Heilongjiang Province at the lower reaches of the Songhua River, developed from the small trading posts that operated during the late Qing into an important regional center at the start of the 20th century. The city’s development throughout history has been shaped first by river trade and then by rail connections, such as the one built in the 1930s, including the historic Jiamusi railway station that was opened in 1937. The rivers of Jiamusi, including the Songhua, Amur, and Ussuri, have served very important purposes for transportation and cultural exchange for quite a long period. It is also known as the first place in China that greets the sunrise, a unique geographic identity which attracts tourists. The local museums in the region preserve regional history and heritage; examples are the Jiamusi Museum.
