History

(1926) Origins and Establishment

Harbin Medical University (HMU) was founded in 1926 as the “Harbin Medical Specialized School” in the province of Heilongjiang in the city of Harbin in China. The founding of the university signified the starting point of an important dispensation in the development of medical education in the northeastern regions of the country. Primarily aimed at developing the necessary medical proficiencies for servicing the health needs of the entire area, the school grew over the years with the expansion of facilities for research and higher learning. In 1958, the school was re-named the “Harbin Medical University” to denote the rising importance of the institution as a pre-eminent learning hub for medical instruction and research.
