The University of Boras is a public university established in 1977 in a city historically known as Sweden's textile and trade center. It is distinguished by its two highly specialized units: the Swedish School of Textiles and the Swedish School of Library and Information Science. The university's research excels in two key areas: Textiles and Fashion and the Swedish Centre for Resource Recovery. Its educational model emphasizes practical relevance and collaboration with external partners, preparing students for highly specific careers. University of Boras offers a compact, centralized campus experience closely linked to industry and societal challenges.
(1977) Origins and Establishment
The University of Boras was officially established in 1977 as part of a national Swedish reform aimed at creating regional university colleges. Its foundation, however, built upon several long-standing specialized educational institutions already present in Boras, which was historically Sweden's textile hub. The most notable pre-existing schools absorbed into the new university college were the Swedish School of Library and Information Science (established in 1972) and the Swedish School of Textiles (which traces its roots back to the Technical School of Weaving founded in 1866). This dual origin is the justification for the university's enduring specializations, making it nationally renowned for its unique focus on textiles and fashion and library and information science from its very start.
Modern Day Development
The University of Boras's modern day development is justified by its sharp focus on distinctive, socially relevant academic environments rooted in regional industry and global challenges. Its strategy centers on creating "Complete academic environments" by strongly linking education and research in specific, cutting edge fields. The university is globally recognized for its Swedish School of Textiles (focusing on circular fashion, technology, and design) and its Swedish Centre for Resource Recovery (pioneering research in material recycling and waste-to-energy solutions). Furthermore, its development is guided by integrating Digitalisation and the UN's Agenda 2030 (Sustainability) across all faculties, ensuring its research and graduates actively contribute to future societal and environmental solutions. This specialization positions the university as a national leader in key areas of the circular economy and smart resource management.
