Umea University, founded in 1965 in northern Sweden, is one of the nation's largest and most comprehensive universities, currently hosting over 36,000 students and renowned for its strong research and tight-knit campus culture. It gained global recognition when research on the CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing tool, which led to a Nobel Prize in Chemistry, was conducted here. The university places a strong emphasis on Life Sciences, Arctic Research, and its highly-ranked Umea Institute of Design (UID). Students consistently rank Umea as having the world's most satisfied international students for overall satisfaction, support, and living environment, offering a unique blend of academic excellence and proximity to the vast nature of northern Sweden.
(1965) Origins and Establishment
Umea University's origin and establishment are rooted in a strategic push to expand higher education and development into northern Sweden. The groundwork began with the establishment of key professional institutions in the mid-20th century, notably the Odontology (Dental) Clinic in 1956 and the Medical School in 1957. Following years of political effort and regional development, the Swedish Parliament formally approved the proposal, and Umea University was officially inaugurated on September 17, 1965, by King Gustaf VI Adolf, becoming Sweden's fifth oldest university within its current borders. This authentic founding marked a turning point, transforming Umea into the primary educational and research center of northern Sweden.
Modern Day Development
Umea University's recent growth is tied to its role as a key driver for northern Sweden, established in 1965 and now a major institution known for research like the CRISPR-Cas9 discovery. The university and the city have co-developed, making Umea a hub for biotechnology, medicine, IT, and sustainability, while the university fosters a dynamic campus and high international student satisfaction.

Umea University's mission is fundamentally to be a nationally influential and regionally rooted institution with a strong international position, all while fulfilling its mandate to improve society. The university achieves this by conducting world-class education and research across all disciplinary domains, with a high degree of openness, diversity, and innovation. A core commitment is to generate new knowledge, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, and produce creative citizens who take a responsibility for the future and contribute to solving pressing societal and global challenges, particularly those related to sustainable development.
