History

(1977) Origins and Establishment

Kristianstad University was officially founded in 1977 as a part of the Swedish government's comprehensive reform of higher education. This establishment integrated several pre-existing, independent professional training colleges in the region into a modern university college (hogskola). Although 1977 marks its formal creation, the institution proudly traces its roots much further back, with the oldest predecessor being the Teacher Training Programme which began in 1835. Other foundational programs include the Nursing training course, which started in 1893, and Technical Education, which was established in 1912. Today, HKR is located in southern Sweden and has grown into a mid-sized, single-campus institution serving approximately 14,000 students, offering a wide range of programs across Education, Health Sciences, Business, Natural Sciences, and Technology, all built upon its diverse historical heritage.

Modern Day Development

Kristianstad University is currently undergoing significant modern development, emphasizing a shift toward strong European integration, high student satisfaction, and highly relevant, practice-integrated academic programs. A key recent highlight is the city of Kristianstad being named the Student City of the Year 2024 by the Swedish National Union of Students (SFS), recognizing the supportive and dynamic environment the university and city provide.
