(1964) Origins and Establishment
The University of Essex was established by royal charter in 1965 as part of the UK's expansion of higher education in the 1960s. Its founding vision, articulated by the first Vice-Chancellor, Sir Albert Sloman, was to create "a new kind of university... where students could live and learn... and research really mattered." The university's architecture, designed by Kenneth Capon, was intended to link social and educational spaces to foster a sense of community.
