(1946) Origins and Establishment
Cranfield University was originally established as the College of Aeronautics in 1946 at RAF Cranfield, a former Royal Air Force base. In 1969, it was renamed the Cranfield Institute of Technology and gained full degree-awarding powers. The university adopted its current name, Cranfield University, in 1993.

It has two campuses: the main campus in Cranfield and a second campus at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom in Shrivenham.
