(1883) Origins and Establishment
Cardiff University has a rich history that began in 1883 when it was established as the University College of South Wales and Monmouthshire. It became a founding college of the University of Wales in 1893. The institution underwent several name changes, becoming University College, Cardiff in 1972, and later merging with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology in 1988. In 1999, it adopted the name Cardiff University, which became its legal name in 2005 after gaining independence from the University of Wales.
