(1794) Origins and Establishment
The University of Tennessee was established on September 10, 1794, originally named Blount College in honor of Tennessee's first governor, William Blount. Over the years, it underwent several name changes, becoming East Tennessee College in 1807 and East Tennessee University in 1840. In 1879, it was renamed the University of Tennessee. The university has a rich history of growth and development, including becoming a land-grant institution under the Morrill Act of 18622.
