(1866) Origins and Establishment
UNH was founded in 1866 as the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts in Hanover, New Hampshire. Initially affiliated with Dartmouth College, it moved to Durham in 1893 and adopted its current name in 1923. The university was established under the Morrill Act of 1862, which granted federal lands to New Hampshire for the creation of an agricultural-mechanical college.
