(1927) Origins and Establishment
The University of Houston (UH) was founded in 1927 as Houston Junior College, initially operating in the San Jacinto High School building to address the educational needs of the rapidly growing city. In 1934, the institution transitioned into a four-year university and was renamed the University of Houston. By 1939, it had moved to its current campus, starting with a single building, now known as the Roy G. Cullen Building. Over the decades, UH grew significantly, achieving state university status in 1963 and joining the University of Houston System in 1977 as its flagship institution. Its evolution into a Tier One research university in 2011 marked a milestone in its commitment to innovation and academic excellence.
