Founded in 1850 by the Society of Mary, it is one of three Marianist universities in the US and the second-largest private university in Ohio. The campus spans 388 acres on both sides of the Great Miami River and is noted for the Immaculate Conception Chapel and the University of Dayton Arena.

The university was founded by the Society of Mary (Marianists) in 1850. Father Leo Meyer, S.M., purchased the Dewberry Farm in Dayton, Ohio, and established St. Mary's School for Boys, which later evolved into the University of Dayton. Over the years, the institution has grown and transformed, becoming a top-tier national research university rooted in the Catholic tradition.
