(1881) Origins and Establishment
Founded on February 21, 1881, as Dakota Agriculture College, SDSU was established under the provisions of the 1862 Morrill Act, which granted federal land to states to fund higher education institutions focusing on agriculture and mechanical arts. Over the years, the university expanded its academic offerings and underwent several name changes, reflecting its growth and diversification. In 1964, it adopted its current name, South Dakota State University, to encompass its broad range of programs and research initiatives.
Modern Day Development
Today, SDSU is recognized as a leading research institution, classified among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity." The university serves over 11,000 students, including undergraduate, graduate, and professional students.
