San Diego State University (SDSU) is a public research university located in San Diego, California. It is the third-oldest university in the California State University system and the oldest higher education institution in San Diego1. SDSU offers over 200 degree programs and has a diverse student body of over 38,000 students.
(1897) Origins and Establishment
SDSU was founded on March 13, 1897, as the San Diego Normal School, a training facility for elementary school teachers. It opened its doors on November 1, 1898, with a class of 135 students. Over the years, the institution evolved, becoming the San Diego State Teachers College in 1921 and later the San Diego State College in 1935. It finally adopted its current name, San Diego State University, on January 1, 1974.
