(1899) Origins and Establishment
NAU was established in 1899 as Northern Arizona Normal School, originally designed to prepare teachers for the state's rapidly growing population. It began with a focus on training teachers for rural schools in northern Arizona, a need that was crucial during the state's early development. Over time, the institution evolved, expanding its academic offerings and changing its name to Northern Arizona University in 1966. This shift reflected the university’s growth into a broader educational institution. From its early days as a small teacher training school, NAU has become a prominent regional university, providing a wide array of educational programs to serve the changing needs of the state and the nation.
Modern Day Development
In the present day, NAU has expanded significantly, both in terms of academic offerings and physical infrastructure. With more than 28,000 students enrolled, it has grown into a respected institution that is recognized for its research initiatives, particularly in areas like environmental sciences, health and wellness, and STEM fields. The university has invested heavily in technology, sustainability, and innovative teaching methods, positioning itself at the forefront of education in the Southwest. Additionally, NAU continues to emphasize its strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, offering programs and resources for underrepresented groups and fostering an environment where all students can thrive. The modern campus features cutting-edge facilities, including research labs, innovation hubs, and recreational spaces to support students both academically and personally.

At the heart of NAU’s mission is a dedication to providing a transformative educational experience that empowers students to become leaders, innovators, and responsible global citizens. The university strives to foster an inclusive and diverse academic community that emphasizes collaboration, creativity, and real-world application. NAU’s mission also involves promoting sustainability and environmental stewardship, reflecting the natural beauty and ecological significance of its Flagstaff location. The university is committed to supporting the success of its students through high-quality teaching, research, and community engagement, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared for a variety of careers and lifelong learning. Through these efforts, NAU aims to contribute meaningfully to the intellectual, social, and economic growth of Arizona and beyond.
