(1870) Origins and Establishment
Missouri S&T was established in 1870 as the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. It was the first technological learning institution west of the Mississippi River1. The school was created in response to the Morrill Land-Grant Acts of 1862, which aimed to promote the liberal and practical education of the industrial classes. Over the years, the institution evolved, changing its name to the University of Missouri at Rolla in 1964 and later to the University of Missouri-Rolla before becoming Missouri S&T in 2008.
