(1865) Origins and Establishment
Lehigh University was founded in 1865 by Asa Packer, an industrial pioneer, philanthropist, and railroad magnate. Packer envisioned an institution that would contribute to the intellectual and industrial growth of the United States during the post-Civil War era. He donated $500,000 and 115 acres of land to establish the university in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, making it one of the most generous endowments for a new university at the time. Initially focused on technical and classical education, Lehigh quickly gained recognition for its innovative approach to engineering and industrial education. Over the years, the university expanded its academic offerings to include arts, sciences, business, and education, reflecting the evolving needs of society.
