(1971) Origins and Establishment
MacEwan University, originally established in 1971 as Grant MacEwan Community College, was named in honor of Dr. J.W. Grant MacEwan, a respected educator, author, and former Lieutenant Governor of Alberta. Its initial mandate focused on providing career-focused education and bridging the gap between secondary school and university, making higher education accessible to a wider demographic in Alberta. In its early years, the institution offered diploma and certificate programs designed to meet the needs of the local labor market. Over time, the college expanded its academic portfolio, developing a reputation for quality education and practical training. By the 1980s, MacEwan had grown significantly, opening multiple campuses and introducing innovative programs in arts, business, and health sciences.
