(1942) Origins and Establishment
Carleton University originated as Carleton College in 1942, founded by the Ottawa Association for the Advancement of Learning to provide educational opportunities for veterans returning from World War II. Initially operating as a non-denominational evening college in rented classrooms, it expanded rapidly post-war, accommodating a surge in enrollment. In 1952, the Ontario Legislature passed the Carleton College Act, granting the institution the authority to confer degrees and officially recognizing it as a university. The university's name was changed to Carleton University in 1957, reflecting its growth and expanded academic offerings. The campus development began in the early 1950s, with significant land donations facilitating the establishment of its current location between the Rideau River and Rideau Canal.
Modern Day Development
In recent years, Carleton University has experienced significant growth and development, enhancing its academic programs and campus infrastructure. The university has constructed several new buildings, including the Advanced Research and Innovation in Smart Environments (ARISE) building, which supports applied research in smart technology. In 2018, Carleton purchased the Dominion-Chalmers United Church in downtown Ottawa, transforming it into a community and cultural hub for artistic performances and academic events. The Nicol Building, a state-of-the-art facility for the Sprott School of Business, was completed in 2021, providing 115,000 square feet of collaborative learning space. These developments reflect Carleton's commitment to providing modern facilities that support innovative research and learning.

Carleton University is committed to providing an outstanding education that prepares students to excel in their chosen fields and contribute to society. The university emphasizes research, teaching, and learning that address critical societal challenges and promote sustainability. Carleton strives to foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and inclusivity within its community.
