(1965) Origins and Establishment
Algoma University was established in 1965 as a university college. It was originally a branch of Laurentian University, but it gained independence in 2008 when it officially became a standalone institution. The university was founded to provide quality higher education and serve the needs of the residents of the Sault Ste. Marie region and Northern Ontario. Over the years, the university has expanded its programs and infrastructure, continually working toward meeting the academic and social needs of its growing student population.
